Day 8: Exciting Discoveries

Today I met my friend Emily for lunch. Usually we have our lunch dates at Circa (on 33rd and 5th), but we decided to try Rosa’s Kosher Pizza and Pasta, the pizza store in the Empire State Building that became Kosher a few months ago. The menu was pretty similar to Circa’s. I ordered some sort of beany vegetable soup. It was a bit bland at first but I added salt and that helped make it more flavorful. The soup came with half of a roll, which was kind of doughy in the middle and really delicious. Overall, I was satisfied with my lunch, but not amazed. I liked that the restaurant itself was less crowded than Circa usually is, and it seems that you are less likely to run into people you know (though I did see a couple of possible readers, and one reader’s sister with her husband. Shout out to my nutritionist reader who is currently looking for a job doing nutritional counseling, if anyone is interested). After leaving Rosa’s I noticed something incredibly exciting – a Tasti D-Lite in the Empire State Building! I happen to love Tasti, and there used to be 2 near my office but they both closed about two years ago. I happily ordered a small cup of Dutch Chocolate and told the woman working behind the counter that she was my new best friend.

  1. As the aforementioned lunch buddy, I'd like to comment on Rosa's. I liked the overall authentic pizza place feel. I mean it was a bit Sbarro's-esque, but it worked. And as Rebecca mentioned, it was nice that it wasn't crowded. I had a romaine lettuce salad with sweet potatoes, broccoli and egg whites, with a Japanese ginger dressing, which was delicious. Overall, I felt satisfied. I was not as excited about Tasti as Rebecca but to each his/her own.

  2. OK people, I think we need to take this blog to the next level. Can we get some input from the huge audience as to why we are so fascinated by what Rebecca ate for lunch every day? Why are so many of us drawn to it? Do we really care that she enjoyed it or not? Are we visiting because we are bored? Are we visiting because Rebecca is some sort of social networked guru who knows a lot of people which makes her lunch important to us? Do we feel like we are getting to know her better? Discuss...

  4. I like reading about what Rebecca ate for lunch because I personally ate the same thing for lunch every day this week- yogurt or cottage cheese, plain whole wheat bread or wrap, and pudding for dessert. Reading about Rebecca's various consumptions reminds me that I should spice up my own menu a bit. Plus, I like Rebecca and can always use another online distraction from my studies...

  5. I am very curious about the decision by Emily to have sweet potato in her salad. Did they put it as part of a "house" salad, or it was your choice from the salad bar? It seems a tad unconventional, but a choice that could be very good.

  6. Thank you for asking, Scott. Actually, it was my choice. I saw it at the salad bar, thought it might be an interesting choice, it was included in the base price, so I thought - heck, you only live once! I'm not sure I would do it again, but I enjoyed it today.

  7. Hi Rebecca,
Long time reader, first time commenter.
What? There's a Tasty-D-Lite nearby? I tried to find one in Penn Station the other day, but couldn't and now I know there's one nearby! Thanks for the info, Rebecca!

Lunch was an experience todya> i will even go so far as to say it was a journey in to the culinary abyss. This week for me has been depressing and difficult. Food has no taste, flowers have no smell, and the air is about as moist as my sponge after dishes. Therefore my general outlook on life was bleek at best. But then, like a tornade under water, this spinach artichoke barrito hit me like MIKE TYSON. The texture was smooth but mysterious. The sides were flavored and delicate. The entire meal was something out of the movie Enchanted. What I mean is that is was unexpectedly happy in the best way possible. So next time your having a down day, pop in that Disney Movie and grab that speical healthy vurrito and escape the mundane.
